You don't have to, but I find that when you do use a base, your makeup stays on longer, doesn't crease, and the colors even go on brighter!

I don't use lipstick, that's just the way my lips are. ;P

Though, Mica Bella can be made into a lip gloss, mascara, liquid eyeliner, eyeshadow, nail polish and hair dye. though, I haven't tried it yet.
