Default natural look foundation that doesnt look cakey?

I just cant find a foundation that goes on and looks natural but doesnt look like i have plastered it on. I have combination skin and large pores too.
I have tried MAC pro longwear, MAC studio sculpt, estee lauder double wear and Chanel pro lumiere but all but the chanel looks cakey and the chanel goes patchy through the day.

Any one got any tips please on a good foundation to use and the best way to apply?

    thanks

    Hello there!

I'm by no means a foundation expert, because I personally don't like the feeling of my skin not being able to "breathe". I also have combination skin. In terms of your pores, make sure you wash your face with warm water when you are cleansing and when you are done, splash your face quickly with a wash of cold water, just to close your pores. I don't really have a problem with big pores, but I know there are many products out there that can minimize the appearance of them, such as Benefit's Porefection (which I believe is a primer).

In terms of foundation, I am really loving Garnier's BB cream right now. It is basically the middle ground between foundation and tinted moisturizer, offering the benefits of a foundation, moisturizer and primer all in one. It's nice and dewey, and provides light to medium buildable coverage. It does have quite a dewy finish, but that dies down slightly once it has sunk into your skin a little bit. The bonus of the BB cream is that it is a skincare product, so not only does it act as a light foundation, but it also has skin care benefits. I just set the cream with some powder on my T-zone, slap a little undereye and blemish covering concealer on and I'm good to go!

The BB cream is available at drugstores, usually in the skin care section if you are interested.

    Hope this helps!

Hi Serz, have you thought of having a personal make-up lesson? They will be able to show you how to apply various foundations and which types of products will be best for your skin. The teaching MUA should have a decent range of products and be able to give recommendations . Or you could hit the make-up counters and do it the free way, haha!

Here are more things to consider for a natural looking foundation:
Moisturize. It's important to keep your face (as well as the rest of your body) hydrated
Concealer. It's best to chose one that is 1-2 shades lighter than your skin color, peachy color. Less is more!
foundation -When choosing a shade try it on top of your hand, that is the area that more closely resembles the skin [color] on your face.

Chanel actually came out with a new foundation called Vitalumier Aqua. I agree, that previous formulas have been to heavy but this one goes on so smoothly and lightly I use it even on the hottest summer days without a problem. It gives surprisingly good coverage for not being a heavy product. My skin has a really natural glow from it as well.

I just recently attended one of MACPro's new Free Lectures Series. And this topic came up, (I'll skip all the details and cut right to the chase.) The MAC Pro Senior Artists reiterated what we Film Pros knew for decades... It's all in the technique on how you apply any foundation on whether you want it to look full, sheer, dewy, matte, or in between and how it doesn't have to look cakey.

Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse looks very natural on the skin while controlling oil. You can layer this foundation and it does not cake up and it continues to look natural. It is the only foundation I use now and I love it!

I agree with ilovemakeup123 that a BB cream may be the way to go for you. They blend so smoothly into the skin, and provide added benefits of SPF, anti-aging, etc. so you don't have to use many products on your face at one time. Different companies make BB creams in different shades, but you can always blend it with your favourite foundation or primer to get a perfect match to your skin tone. The BRTC Jasmine Water BB cream is SO light and blends so easily, as well as has an SPF of 30, and it has natural ingredients instead of synthetic ones that could clog your pores. Good luck!

First of all - if you're looking for a "natural" look - then I'm not sure why you tried Estee Lauder double wear because it's the least natural looking foundation, it's full coverage and can look cakey.

You need to establish what you mean by "combination skin" by finding out which parts are oily and which are dry.
That way you can find the best formulation for your skin type by catering for the type which is the majority of your skin.

Often, it's a lot easier to go for a more moisturizing formulation to cater for the dry parts, and then use a sheer powder over the oily parts as you can always take down shine but you can't really rehydrate the dry parts if you use an oil free formulation.

If things are going cakey it means they're the wrong type of foundation.
I would strongly suggest trying Bobbi Brown as all of her foundations are categorized by skin type, that way each formulation gives the most natural, flawless finish and always looks like skin.
